CarmDAS provides a range of safe emergency accommodation for women, children and men escaping all forms of domestic violence. This is a place of safety for those at risk of homelessness due to domestic abuse.

All of our emergency housing is situated close to shops, schools and other local amenities.  Accommodation can either be self-contained or shared with others.

The refuge is a temporary place of safety for women and children. It has five rooms and each room has an ensuite bathroom, microwave, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. There are two shared kitchens, living room, play room, young person's room, therapy room, a communal lounge and an outside garden space.

We understand that moving into emergency accommodation can feel overwhelming, particularly for children. Our warm and supportive team will help you to settle in, feel safe and secure and start building a strong support network.

Children living in emergency accommodation receive a range of specialist support from our dedicated children's team, so they can process their feelings and make sense of what has happened to them in a safe environment. We build positive relationships with schools and other professionals to ensure children have all the support they need to overcome the trauma of domestic abuse and live safe, happy lives. It's important to remember that children can recover with the right support.

Our refuge provides an accessible room with wheelchair access and walk in shower facilities, suitable for women on their own or women with children. We recognise that people have different experiences, perspectives and backgrounds and we work to ensure our support is accessible to all.

Please speak to us if you would like help to access our emergency accommodation, or have any worries around this for yourself or your children.

Can I stay in your emergency accommodation?

You can stay in our emergency accommodation if:

  • You're experiencing domestic abuse, and we have space available in our refuge or self contained accommodation on the day you contact us

  • We've carried out an assessment and have agreed that the room is suitable for you and any children/young people you're responsible for

  • We've checked that it is a safe option for you, our staff and other residents

  • You're ready to leave straight away - please speak to us if you need support with safety planning and preparing to leave safely

Emergency accommodation is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If we do not have any spaces available, or our emergency accommodation is not suitable for your needs, we will signpost you to other services that may be able to help. We also accept referrals from Social Workers, Housing Officers, Health Visitors and a wide range of professionals. Our self-contained accommodation is suitable for families and older people.

All of our rooms are fully furnished including our dedicated spaces for children and teens. We also have a free community clothes rail.

What can we help with?

Whilst living in emergency accommodation we work with every person to build their confidence and self esteem, achieve safety and independence, and have control over their lives. We'll provide you with:

  • emotional and practical support tailored to your needs

  • help to access services such as housing, police, legal, education and healthcare services

  • help to address money worries and access benefits and financial support

  • help to settle children into their new home and school environment

  • help to recover from domestic abuse and rebuild your life

  • help to access play, leisure and cultural activities

  • help to access opportunities related to volunteering, work, training or education

  • help to live free from violence and abuse and choose your own journey

We also provide activities to promote emotional wellbeing so that people can make friends and form positive relationships with others, who understand what living with domestic abuse is like. Recent activities have included wellbeing walks, craft sessions, cooking, baking, recycling, and themed parties for children. We run a small facilitated peer support group for survivors of domestic abuse, where you can gain strength from others around you. See our Wellbeing and Recovery page for more details.

All of our spaces promote physical, emotional and psychological safety, helping people to heal and recover.

“I’ve only been here two days but the support has been amazing, from first speaking to my keyworker to moving in, it has been great and I'm not sure I would have even got through these past two days without the support"
