Cover Your Tracks

Zen garden with stone

If you're experiencing domestic abuse, we understand you may not want your partner, ex partner or family member to know that you're searching for advice or information online.

When using your mobile phone, tablet or computer

If you're worried about your digital safety, or the risk of another person knowing the websites you've browsed on your mobile phone, tablet or computer, including children's devices, you can visit Cover your tracks online - Women’s Aid for guidance.

Things you can do to minimise the risk of another person knowing the websites you've visited online:

  • Know how to use the quick exit button

  • Know how to delete your browsing history

  • know how to browse the internet more privately

  • know how to change your passwords and do this regularly

To be completely safe, use a device or computer that belongs to a friend who you trust or your local library, as it’s not always easy to completely avoid being tracked online.

Exit Site

The QUICK EXIT button at the side of the CarmDAS website will quickly hide the page from view - it's important to remember you'll still need to clear your browser history to cover your tracks.

Delete Browsing History

As you look at websites online, your browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Safari, Microsoft Edge) will create a list of all the website pages you've visited and store this information, this is known as your history. To delete your full history, follow the instructions from your browser.

Private Browsing

Most web browsers allow you to use the internet in ‘Incognito' mode. This allows you to browse the web more privately. This can be a good first step to increasing your privacy, but it may arouse suspicion if an abuser is monitoring or checking your devices. In this case, you may want to leave a visible history of non-sensitive browsing use.

General Security

It's best to use a password to log in to your computer or device, if you don’t then anyone can use them and can track your internet usage. Make sure you change passwords regularly and don't use the same password for all accounts.
