& Our Environment
CarmDAS are committed to safeguarding not just people but places too. We take our responsibility to our environment very seriously. From the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals which overarch the UK Government’s Net Zero Strategy: Build Back Greener we have looked at how we can align and support them. We’ve consistently been driven by the goals of the Welsh Government’s Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act (2015) and now it’s time for us to also work towards the environmental goals of the ActFirst Steps:
Using the Welsh Government’s guidance and reporting mechanism for calculating carbon emissions, we have crunched the numbers to see what CarmDAS’s CO2 emissions were for 2024-2025. Calculating carbon emissions is something not everyone has got around to doing for their own organisations, so some emissions have been calculated using the Welsh Government’s emission factor conversion rates which were applied to the expenditure during the period to get the data. Other data has had to be sensibly estimated as it was unavailable for the time period. We’ve learned what we need to track now.

CarmDAS, as an organisation, is responsible for 254 tonnes of CO2 emissions during 2024-2025. We employ 19 staff and supported 1021 adults and children during that time period. That’s 244 kgs of CO2 emissions per person. That may not sound like much, but we know we can do better.

The Supply Chain in these graphs refers to all of the external organisations that we use who provide services to CarmDAS. We cannot directly control the emissions from these organisations, but they do form part of our emissions as our suppliers, so we have included them here.

Next Steps:
Now that we have a starting point, CarmDAS has been looking at how we can specifically reduce our emissions.
Work that we’ve done so far is to move our electricity and gas supplies for our office and emergency accommodation to a “green” energy supplier which provides us with energy only from renewable sources.
The larger focus for this year is to tackle our gas emissions as they are the highest and most harmful to the environment. The plan is to switch from gas to electricity wherever we can.
Strategy and Future Planning:
Using this data and our knowledge and understanding of environmental sustainability, CarmDAS is currently working on writing a long-term strategic plan for us to achieve net-zero status by 2050. We will publish our strategy on our website once it is complete.
Tracking Our Improvement:
CarmDAS will look at the difference in our CO2 emissions and build a graph which tracks how we’re doing by year. We’ve already started compiling the data for 2025-2026 and we’re excited to see how much our plans and work being done this year will positively impact our annual emissions for 2025-2026.
How you can help us:
We’re always looking for more information on how we can be more environmentally sustainable so if you think can help us with this then we’d love to hear from you. Please email info@carmdas.org with your ideas/suggestions or to signpost us to organisations that we can work with.
